The people who didnt get a license were called,” Runners of the woods,” and they would also call them coureurs de bois . The French were the first Europeans to live in the state of Indiana. A ton of them hoped to find treasures of many sorts and get rich in the fur trade. Contact between the French and the Native Americans changed their lives between both works. Some French fur traders married Native Americans and had children. French missionary’s came to the Native American’s and taught them about Still Christianity some became Christians but most followed their religion., the Native Americans life had been changed. Native Americans always hunted with bows and arrows for food and clothing. Now they hunt with guns and they shoot the poor animals for their soft fur to trade with the French. In the early 1700’s the French would build forts with materials they traded to protect themselves from unfriendly Natives Americans and Europeans, such as the British. Fort Ouiatenon was built in 1717 on the Wabash River. The French named it for the Wea Native Americans that lived near that piece of land and the Wabash River.
Fort Ouiatenon is now in the piece of land that is now Lafayette. The French also built a fort called Fort Miami. It was located near the Native American village of Kekionga in 1715. Fort Miami was also built between the Wabash and Maumee rivers. Today Fort Miami would stand where Fort Wayne is now. Each fort had a large fence called a stockade to help keep the enemies out in case they come and attacked. Inside the fence, the stockade was a blockhouse.
A blockhouse is a large, high, square building that is made of logs. It is used to defend or protect a fort. If enemies where to attack soldiers would be able to shoot guns threw the little holes in it. The walls kept the soldiers safe and sound. As the fur trade grew the French traders started thinking of the forts as their homes. The forts started to become more like small nifty towns. Once the trader’s family’s came to live with them. The children living in the nifty homes helped their parent’s plant crops and bundle fur.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSNNoeUf4bA
